Realistic Job Expectations

I'm 42 years old and will be graduating in May.  I have a gut feeling that I'll have a difficult time finding a job in a publc accouning firm. The Big 4 don't recruit on my campus.

I have definite plans to start the CPA process as soon as I graduate.  Obviously, I'm actively seeking a job.  If any of my local CPA firms list positions, it is generally for more experienced accountants.  I'm curious if any of you think I should not bother sending cold resumes to my local CPA firms?  I hate to waste my time.
