A doozy of an ice and snow storm is expected to hammer parts of the Midwest, South, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast this weekend and as I prepare myself by charging all my devices and downloading some shows should the power go down, I thought it would be good to remind any active CPA exam candidates to check Prometric closures if you’re scheduled to sit while all this crap hits your city. As of publication time, there are six US testing centers temporarily closed: 0010 and 0012 in Austin, TX; 0385 in Conway, SC; 1718 in Harrisburg, PA; 1747 in Wilmington, NC; 2327 in Sault Ste Marie, MI; and 3024 in Valdosta, GA. If this thing gets as bad as some weather models are predicting, that list is going to be quite a bit longer than it currently is. The snowy and icy winter storm they’re calling Fern could affect more than 230 million people in the US. That’s a whopping two-thirds of our entire population.
You should receive a notification if your test is canceled due to weather but we’re all smart enough to know you shouldn’t rely 100% on Prometric and NASBA to keep you in the loop, right? NASBA has some more info on canceled exam procedures here.
When I checked testing dates, I realized this is also a discipline testing month (one of four total for the year). Great. Discipline testing is open through the 31st of January and not again until April so yay for those of you who might miss out on TCP, BAR, or ISC due to snow.
Remember, your safety is more important than the exam. Don’t do something stupid like trek to the testing center on skis just because your NTS is expiring soon. NASBA’s official guidance is “If the test center is open, candidates need to make an effort to attend their appointments providing their safety and well-being are not at risk.” If your testing center remains open and you determine your well-being would be at risk if you were to venture out to test, follow these steps provided by NASBA:
If the site is open, but the candidate cannot attend due to safety/ travel concerns, outages etc., the candidate is required to contact NASBA via email at candidatecare@nasba.org and provide the following information:
- Candidate’s name as it appears on the NTS
- Name of section and section ID number printed on the NTS
- Appointment date
- Test Center location
- A detailed outline of the circumstances which prevented attending the appointment
- Documentation of the weather conditions in the affected area (attach a weather report or travel advisory)
- Current NTS expiration date
You might want to make sure you have all your documents handy now just in case you don’t have power on test day and are still able to attend your exam. Especially those of you under Pepco’s jurisdiction (she said from experience).
Stay safe and warm, everyone!

Was going through becker final review only to receive a wonderful email telling me my TCP exam was cancelled. I’m so excited to wait another 3 MONTHS before I can take it again 😑
You are not alone. To make it more challenging, my NTS expires on 4/22. I do taxes for a living which means my new window is April 16-22. Only upside is that tax season will just continue to reinforce the concepts I’ll be tested on.
