Bringing up the rear among the Big 4 in the 2020 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list is Deloitte, the largest public accounting firm in the U.S. in terms of number of employees and revenue. But while we’re talking about Deloitte and “largest,” the Green Dot had the largest drop in the ranking among the Big 4, falling from #26 in 2019 to #45 in this year’s F100BCTWF. Even Life at Deloitte can’t make lemonade out of those lemons.
But after downing a large glass of the green Kool-Aid, Stephani Long, chief talent officer at Deloitte, spit out this quote with all the typical clichés: it’s a tremendous accomplishment, total team effort, we have strong leadership, blah blah blah:

I guess Deloitte has to try and say something to make its employees feel good about working at a place that finished behind Wegmans Food Markets, The Cheesecake Factory, CarMax, and Publix Super Markets in the F100BCTWF.
Previous ranking: #26. Here’s why Deloitte made this year’s ranking, according to Fortune:
In the past year, Joseph Ucuzoglu took over as CEO of the professional services firm from predecessor Cathy Engelbert. The company also saw 12% voluntary turnover last year. Still, employees appreciate the work culture: “Everyone is given chances to improve themselves,” one staffer notes. “And regardless of how much experience you have in the field, you are respected and given opportunities to learn.”
I don’t know about you, but to me that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of how great a company Deloitte is to work for.
Stats of note:
- Employees: 68,714
- Number of job openings: 3,600 (as of February 2020)
- Percentage of job growth: 11%
- Number of new graduates hired: N/A
- Percentage of women: 42.7%
- Percentage of minorities: 44.1%
- Most common salaried job: Senior/senior consultant
- PTO limit (days): 43
- Number of sick days: N/A
At least Deloitte gets the award for “Big 4 Firm With the Fewest White People.” But … Deloitte also gets the award for “Big 4 Firm With the Lowest Percentage of Women Employed.”
And check out this Twitter thread from @ybees3 called “Deloitte Diaries.” Good stuff.
One day I will do a Deloitte diaries and tell you the fucked up things that go on at the Big 4. Honestly, I have seen people paid £300k a year + claim back £1.50 on expenses for a muffin. I have seen Heads of Region urinate in a hotel lobby plant pot in the middle of a work party

I saw a junior land a graduate scheme in tax only to be sacked for stealing printer cartridges from the stationary cupboard and selling them online, with an eBay account linked back to his work email ?

A grad schemern, at his first Christmas party, slapped a secretary on the ass. When the Head of London office saw this, he told the guy go home, sleep it off and it'll be a verbal warning. The guy decided to punch the partner, break his nose and gave the secretary a black eye

One Christmas party, at a swanky hotel, a maid was mopping the floor of the lobby. She went to clear bottles and stuff the party had left, a senior director decided to urinate in her mop bucket. When she came back she proceeded to mop the hotel lobby floor …with the piss water

However 2 years later, he failed another exam. He claimed his mum wasn't well. To prove this he provided a doctor's note. However the doctor was the same "doctor" that wrote the first letter and didn't actually exist. He was sacked and sued and banned from being an accountant

[Here’s a link to the article Adrienne wrote in 2012 about the Deloitte trainee who faked the doctor’s notes after failing his chartered accountant exams.]
