You may have heard that the college football season over the weekend, which means tax professionals’ mandatory Saturdays will be a little more unbearable and your football crazed significant other will not be seen nor heard from (with the exception of deafening bodily functions) until January.
January, of course, is bowl season when the best teams in the land compete for bragging rights as champions of various BCS bowls. It also allows a few dozen mediocre teams to play equally mediocre teams for no particular reason. One of these bowls is the Gator Bowl. Sure it might be the 6th oldest bowl and sure, it has been played on New Year’s Day since 1996 but that doesn’t make it any more meaningful. It will feature teams from the SEC and The Big 10 that will be a threat for their respective conference championships for 2 to 3 weeks. In short, the Gator Bowl has a long tradition of fielding third-rate football teams.
The Evans, Ga.-based company announced a multi-year partnership Thursday with the Gator Bowl Association and the fact that it was named a new “title sponsor” of the bowl, starting with the 2012 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 2.[…] TaxSlayer may not have the same name recognition as TurboTax or TaxAct, but it comes out of a tax prep business that dates back 40 years.
And in case you’re not convinced that TaxSlayer.com isn’t doing everything they can to get their name out there, they also sponsor Dale Earnhardt, Jr., which will make them a household name in no time. In the South, anyway.
Hell, they did even go with another woman. They figured making Davis Love III the third dude golfer to be sponsored by McGladrey was the best route.
Although no terms were disclosed on DL-cubed’s deal, we’re guessing it’s a decent deal, not Phil Mickelson money mind you, but he won’t be starving either.
And DL3 is pretty flippin’ pleased to be the third amigos, “Following the great work McGladrey has done with the Davis Love Foundation, it was a natural progression for me to join Team McGladrey and proudly support their brand in the way they’ve supported my Foundation. It was great to kick off my new sponsorship with McGladrey in style with a good showing at the U.S. Open, and I look forward to continued success on and off the course as a member of Team McGladrey.”
Likewise, C.E Andrews is pumped to have a 3rd join the team “Davis and the rest of our Team McGladrey Foursome demonstrate the values of integrity, excellence, understanding and teamwork – values that mirror our company’s approach to serving and understanding our clients.”

Unfortch for all of us, D Love stayed on script and didn’t mention Natalie Gulbis specifically which just reeks of a “bros before hoes” mentality. If McGladrey wants to sponsor a boys club, that’s their business but you can’t tell us that adding another lady on the team wouldn’t have worked just as well, if not better. Oh well. We’re sure Natalie will enjoy watching the three dudes ice each other at the joint appearances.
Forget the fact that what’s-her-name can’t hit the links, let alone join the Old Man’s Club that is Augusta; this weekend is all about Tiger Woods and, if you’re from the KPMG Kamp, Phil Mickelson. Not a resident of the KPMG Kamp is Chris Rock:
Don’t get me wrong – I love Phil, and so should you. What’s not to love? Big goofy smile, overweight just enough to make the average golfer feels connected to the lovable pork chop of an athlete. And he’s left handed, so you just know the world is out to get Golf’s Favorite Underdog. Golf and chainsaws, a lefty’s biggest fears.
But I digress. Back to Uncle Peat.
Phil currently sits tied atop the leader board at five under par, tied with three others. But who cares about those knicker-wearing chumps?! UNCLE PEAT IS IN FIRST PLACE!!!
Us regular peons can only imagine the jubilation amongst KPMG leadership in attendance this weekend. T-Fly and The New Guy back slapping each other and clients-to-be. But are they nervous? After all, Phil is much like KPMG – always the hopeful underdog, their supporters praying that their fearless leaders don’t slice it and end up in the rough (or court). There are rough patches in every round, but coming out ahead of the game is key, is it not?
Hopefully the Philster can keep himself and his catchy hat on top of the leader board going into the weekend. For the tax crew out there, you can follow your favorite Tiger Slayer’s weekend rounds live on Masters.com. Hopefully streaming video isn’t blocked by the Kamp Kounselors.
Accounting firms don’t do much advertising. It’s got something to do with ethics and since the CPA exam is ancient history for some we can’t talk specifics.
Firms do like to sponsor stuff related to golf. Tournaments, players, etc. One recipient of accounting firm cash has been widely followed here but now we recently discovered another firm sponsoree that, we feel, may rouse as loyal of a following as Phil.
