Job Description:

Our client is a virtual, fractional accounting and finance firm covering AP, AR, payroll, controllership, and CFO-level support. The firm operates on a fixed-fee model, which means growth comes from efficiency and quality rather than billable hours. Continuous improvement is central to how the team operates.

In this Staff Accountant role, you’ll maintain daily accuracy across multiple client accounts, resolve loose ends before they become close-time emergencies, and continuously improve the processes you inherit. This is a standard entry point toward a Controller-track career at the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain near-continuous reconciliation of bank and credit card activity, AP/AR subledgers, and general ledger accuracy
  • Code transactions consistently and correctly the first time; keep nothing unexplained in suspense or clearing accounts
  • Investigate and resolve unassigned loose ends — unidentified receipts, stale outstanding checks, drifted prepaid/accrual schedules, fixed asset rollforwards — and communicate root causes
  • Deliver assigned reconciliations, schedules, and entries on time with workpapers that are clear and reviewable without follow-up questions
  • Escalate discrepancies the same day they’re identified, before they become client-facing issues
  • Identify and implement process improvements (bank feed rules, recurring entries, templates, checklists) that reduce manual work over time
  • Collaborate with and report to a Controller who reviews work, provides coaching, and assigns growth-oriented responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of hands-on staff accounting or full-charge bookkeeping experience on an accrual basis
  • Demonstrated reconciliation discipline across bank, credit card, subledger-to-GL, and intercompany accounts
  • Experience in a multi-client or multi-entity environment (outsourced accounting, client accounting services, or a multi-entity company)
  • Proficiency with a modern accounting app stack (QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar) and AP/expense tools (Bill.com, Ramp, Expensify, or similar)
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including lookups, pivots, and building self-updating schedules
  • Clear written communication skills for cross-time-zone client and team collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Payroll processing or payroll reconciliation experience
  • Experience with system migrations or cleanup engagements
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent practical experience
  • CPA candidacy (supported, not required)

Benefits & Culture

  • Fully remote position
  • Fixed-fee business model
  • Transparent, error-tolerant culture
  • Team-protective policies, including exiting clients who disrespect staff
  • Clear growth path toward Controller-level roles
  • Staged, transparent interview process
