Job Description:

Our client is a virtual, fractional accounting and finance firm covering AP, AR, payroll, controllership, and CFO-level support. The firm operates on a fixed-fee model, which means growth comes from efficiency and quality rather than billable hours. Continuous improvement is central to how the team operates.

This Controller role will take full ownership of a book of client closes, build the onboarding foundation for new clients, and mentor the staff accountants who support your engagements. Success in this role means the firm becomes measurably better because of your presence, not more dependent on it.

Responsibilities

  • Own full-cycle monthly close and reporting for an assigned book of clients, including reconciliations, accruals, estimates, and documented judgment calls
  • Present financials directly to clients and lead monthly conversations that translate numbers into business insight
  • Design onboarding for new clients: chart of accounts structure, opening balance validation, app/tech stack selection, close calendars, workpaper templates, and written procedures
  • Review and develop staff accountants’ work — provide coaching, not just corrections — and assign stretch work to accelerate their growth
  • Build and maintain SOPs, workpaper standards, and review procedures that reduce single-person dependency across the team
  • Serve as a senior technical resource on accrual-basis GAAP questions
  • Disclose errors within 24 hours, root-cause them, and implement permanent fixes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience owning full-cycle accrual-basis monthly closes at a controller level
  • Experience building accounting functions from the ground up — chart of accounts design, systems implementation/migration, opening balance conversion, close calendar development
  • Demonstrated success developing junior staff or reviewing peers’ work in a way that increased their independence
  • Strong client-facing communication skills, including presenting results and fielding real-time questions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a multi-client or multi-entity environment (outsourced accounting, client accounting services, or similar)
  • Non-profit accounting experience: donor restrictions, functional expense allocation, grant compliance, audit/Form 990 readiness
  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent professional credential

Benefits & Culture

  • Fully remote position
  • Fixed-fee business model
  • Team-protective policies, including exiting clients who disrespect staff
  • Clear, staged interview process
