Deloitte UK Reports Negative Revenue for the First Time in 15 Years, Holds Back Promotions and Hiring

Like every other firm of equivalent size in the year of our lord 2025, Deloitte UK is tightening their belts. And like every other firm of equivalent size doing the same, they’re pinning it on “economic headwinds.”

Reports Telegraph:

Deloitte has slashed hiring and cut back on promotions for its most senior staff as it warned an economic slowdown was harming UK investment.

On Tuesday, the accountancy giant revealed it has reduced the number of new recruits joining the firm and promoted fewer managers to partner level amid “continued economic headwinds”.

To be fair, the King’s Deloitte did, in fact, get slapped around by economic headwinds. For the first time in 15 years, the firm has reported negative revenue growth. Revenue for the year ended 31 May 2025 fell 1% at £5.68 billion (approx. $7.7 billion USD) vs. FY24’s £5.75 billion. Don’t feel bad for the partners though, distributable profit was up 4% from last year at £789 million and average profit per equity partner increased 4% to £1.051 million ($1.4 million USD).

Revenue and growth (or lack thereof) by service line shows us exactly where things went wrong:

  • Tax & Legal: +7%
  • Audit & Assurance: +3%
  • Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory: +3%
  • Technology & Transformation: -10%

“This is a robust set of results in a complex market,” said Richard Houston, Deloitte UK Senior Partner and CEO. “Geopolitics and continued economic headwinds meant that many organisations have been carefully managing their costs and delaying certain investments. In light of this, we have had to review and make changes to the shape of our firm, but we’ve remained resilient with notable client successes across our businesses.”

PwC UK reported similarly not-great results, having eked out just .3% growth. Yeah, global numbers aren’t going to be great this year.
