With all this bad stuff like layoffs and pay cuts and furloughs going on in public accounting, it warms the cockles of my heart that there’s still a little competitive poaching going on. We have to go to Australia to find some, but like I tell my kids: You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.
It’s been a little more than seven years since we’ve reported on BDO poaching PwC, but Bravo Delta Oscar of the Australian variety did just that recently:
BDO welcomes new Tax Partner Tim Sandow to the Adelaide office, who joins the firm from PwC.
Throughout Tim’s career he has provided tax advice to a variety of private and public companies, in a range of industries, particularly in relation to mergers and acquisitions, international tax, tax governance, liaising with the ATO, tax consolidations and tax effect accounting. With more than 25 years’ experience, Tim has been appointed to lead the Tax team in South Australia.
BDO Office Managing Partner in Adelaide, Rudy Pieck, said Tim’s appointment is well timed as the firm focusses on ensuring its clients are in the best position to deal with the challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis.
“Tax is a constant growth area for BDO nationally and we expect this will be intensified as businesses navigate their way through COVID-19, but also as they come out the other side and look to embrace the opportunities the post-COVID-19 environment presents,” Rudy said.
“Tim has strong networks in the tax community — including the ATO, State Revenue Office and fellow tax lawyers and accountants — and we’re looking forward to being able to offer our clients the insights these connections bring,” he said.
“Tim also brings strong knowledge of the natural resources, energy and defense sectors, which is another focus area of the Adelaide office.”
TS had two stints with P. Dubs: the first was from 1994 to 2004 as a tax senior manager, according to his LinkedIn profile, and the second was as a special advisor from June 2019 until he left for BDO in April 2020.
Before boomeranging back to PwC last year, Sandow spent 15 years at KPMG in Australia as a partner and national leader of the firm’s Energy & Natural Resources practice.
Sandow is a former state chair of the Tax Institute’s South Australia Division and has been actively involved in various committees of the Tax Institute since 1996. He currently is the South Australian representative on the Tax Institute’s National Board.
But that’s not all. Let’s travel roughly 8,350 miles over the Pacific Ocean from Adelaide, South Australia to Langley, British Columbia, where former PwCer George Stefan has been working at BDO Canada for the past few months.
As part of a continued commitment to improve service and grow its Tax team, BDO Canada LLP has added George Stefan to the Vancouver office as a partner. George’s role will be to continue to build BDO’s reputation as a leading provider of tax services across Western Canada.
“We are excited to welcome George as partner in the SR&ED and Government Incentives team,” says Dave Walsh, Tax Service Line Leader for BDO Canada. “Adding his knowledge and experience will help us execute our growth strategy and future plan for the firm.”
Mr. Stefan joined BDO on February 1, 2020.
This is Stefan’s second go-round with BDO Canada, having worked at the firm from 2014 to 2018 as a senior manager, according to his LinkedIn profile.
A self-proclaimed “creative thinker cleverly disguised as an engineer,” Stefan worked at PwC Canada in Surrey, British Columbia, as a tax partner for two years before joining BDO.
He also was a senior manager, Global R&D and Government Incentives, at Deloitte in Vancouver for four years.
