This role calls for a versatile accounting professional comfortable working across the full spectrum of nonprofit and religious organization finance. Deep, hands-on experience with churches, dioceses, denominational offices, and 501(c)(3) organizations is central to this role. Engagements are built around the specific fund accounting, compliance, and reporting needs of mission-driven organizations, and clients range from lay volunteers to boards requiring formal financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on bookkeeping support and training to client staff or volunteers, including chart of accounts setup, fund accounting, and transaction coding specific to church and nonprofit environments
  • Experience with grant accounting
  • Review and reconcile bank, credit card, and general ledger accounts
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (FASB ASC 958)
  • Assist clients with budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and grant or restricted fund tracking
  • Serve as outsourced controller for clients needing higher-level oversight, including internal controls review, policy development, and board-level financial reporting
  • Prepare clients for financial statement audits, reviews, or compilations, including documentation organization and coordination with external auditors
  • Support Form 990 preparation and other nonprofit compliance requirements
  • Identify process improvements and internal control gaps, recommending solutions scaled to each client’s size and resources
  • Communicate clearly and patiently with clients of varying accounting knowledge, including volunteer and lay leadership
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism consistent with a mission-driven client base

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3–5 years of progressive fund accounting experience
  • 3–5 years of experience serving churches, dioceses, denominational offices, or 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations (required — this is a core qualification for the role)
  • 1+ year of experience training or coaching bookkeepers, treasurers, or administrative staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work across a range of skill levels, from basic bookkeeping instruction to controller-level financial oversight
  • Working knowledge of fund accounting principles and FASB nonprofit reporting standards
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and audit-readiness practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting concepts to non-accountants
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines independently
  • Reliable access to a computer and internet

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification
  • Experience preparing organizations for a Single Audit
  • Familiarity with Form 990 and nonprofit tax compliance
