Accountants Across America Stunned to Find Themselves Nodding Along With JD Vance

H1B visa close up

“The Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point” was already taken as a headline.

Like him or hate him, JD Vance had some things to say about H1-B visas on a Turning Point USA stage tonight that you may appreciate. Nice that there’s finally something most of us can at least nod in agreement to:

CC: “The visa was meant for a super genius studying at an American university and working at a great company, someone we want to keep in the United States. But it’s now used to hire an accountant at half the cost of an American citizen. We shouldn’t import accountants when we have Americans ready to work for a fair wage.”

Now do offshoring!

  1. My wife works for a restaurant chain and handles visas for them. None of it was that crazy, but I knew this visa stuff was going to become a huge issue when she ended up working on acquiring an H1B for a bartender position.

  2. This is just words until bills/laws start getting passed and I have mixed feelings about it due to the potential outcome.

But this essentially sounds like it is going to be a talking point so people vote one way versus the other…like how for 4 years someone promised 50k then 10k of student loan forgiveness for it vanish into obscurity? I’m not saying any side if better here, but seems like…the same story, same ending, just different clowns

  3. Eh – I don’t like the whole bar that they’re trying to raise that H1Bs should only be for super geniuses. It’s just easy pickings since it’s the brown guy directly working next to you – so it’s visible so a clown like Vance can rile you up.

I work with a few and they’re all very competent at their jobs, and I like working with them. Also the regulations tied to H1Bs doesn’t really give room for underpaying them compared to a US employee.

The issue to focus on is the outsourcing. They’re completely shittifying accounting as a career in the US

  4. As someone who has worked in recruiting, I can attest to the fact that its fairly easy to be an overseas super genius in accounting given the quality of candidates coming out of universities. Has he also seen the reports which mention the HUGE decline in CPAs? That has nothing to do with H1Bs. Its the education system and the accounting just not being that sexy 🙂

  5. I clicked the link because I didn’t think it would be as obviously dumb as the click bait. But it is. I doubt anybody cares if there are any H1Bs at CPA firms, they seem to be hiring anyone incompetent or otherwise that can get the exam passed. So the comment is a joke of some sort not relevant to the accounting profession or is a serious misinterpretation of the visa program used an example to shield criticism? Or it’s click bait for those who think JD Vance is the worst person we (don’t) know? I don’t know or care about JD Vance, he’s a politician and says a lot of things, some of which would probably make it into your ideology Venn diagram if you were taking each statement separately and objectively. So this is just a meme post? Hate everything about it.
