Items Up for Bid at the IRS’s Young Buck Auction: ‘Marijuana Leaf Picture,’ Royal Copenhagen White Bear Figures, Three-foot Santa Claus

The good news is that lots of this stuff is probably affordable. Not like some auctions.

From the Tennessean: 
• Several gold and platinum records for his own work and collaborations with 50 Cent – Yawn.
• Several pieces of fine art – Fine art according to whom? The IRS or the reporter? OR Young Buck?
• Multiple LCD and plasma televisions – Shock.
• Designer watches and an assortment of faux-fur coats – Again, floored.
• Pictures of Al Pacino and rapper Tupac – Lover of legends, obviously
• A “marijuana leaf picture” – Bid increments are 25¢.
• Three Royal Copenhagen white bear figurines – These? Really, Young Buck?
• A 3-foot white and silver Santa Claus decoration – Never too early to start the Christmas shopping!

Back in March we told you about non-Phil/Tiger golfer Søren Hansen, who was looking at jail time for dodging about 10 million kroner in taxes.

He managed to avoid the Danish joint but a judge did order him to pay 8 million in back taxes and an additional 8 million in fines. This works out to $2.6 million which is around what Tiger Woods spends on hookers in a weekend. So in other words – a chunk.


Hansen maintained throughout the ordeal that he was not a resident of Denmark because he changed his residence to Monaco in 1999 (it’s on his Wikipedia page for crissakes! What’s it going to take?!?) and thus not subject to the tax. The judge didn’t buy it because “he used his summerhouse in Hornbæk for residential purposes, as well as stayed over in his girlfriend’s Copenhagen apartment regularly.”

Obviously Hansen could have moved his g/f to Monaco to avoid all the trips back but that would have put a serious damper on the Monaco tail situation.

‘Forging and Selling Invoices to Avoid Taxes’ in China Is No Longer Punishable By Death

We Americans do love a good firing squad/lethal injection/electric chair/hangin’ but the Chinese make us look like a bunch of pansies by comparison. However, after several millennia, China might be getting soft in its old age. As the Associated Press reports, some economic crimes have been pulled from the “do this and die” list:

Thirteen economic, nonviolent offenses will be removed from the list of 68 crimes punishable by death, said Lang Sheng, who heads a legal committee for the National People’s Congress, China’s legislature. The 13 crimes include forging and selling invoices to avoid taxes, and smuggling cultural relics and precious metals such as gold out of the country.

However, it should be noted, “[A]n expert said the move was unlikely to significantly reduce executions, since people convicted of those crimes in the past have rarely received the maximum penalty and capital punishment can still be used to punish other economic crimes such as corruption.”

We’re not intimately familiar with all the potential criminal tax pitfalls in China, so it’s safe to assume there are plenty of other tax crimes that will still get you the dirt nap. International tax scofflaws should tread carefully.
