Monday Morning Accounting News Brief: PwC UK Raises; ESG = $$$; Mid-Tier Tech Sucks | 6.27.22

a man and his dog not reading accounting news

Crypto has crashed–oops sorry, there’s a “crypto winter” and apparently that’s important for CPAs to be aware of. Mid-tier firms have crappy technology. “Deloitte Consulting Analyst got minimum 15% base increase since May 2021” is something relevant to PwC UK staff getting a 9% pay bump to offset cost of living according to one Redditor though we aren’t sure why. EY partners are expected to vote on whether to split audit and consulting by fall. ESG is up for grabs and Big 4 firms stand to profit, at least according to the EU parliament member who said firms have a “de facto monopoly which will allow them to charge whatever they want in a few years’ time, once they have captured the bulk of the market.” Oh and Going Concern’s longest-serving troll is saying nice things about us which I believe is one of the four signs of the apocalypse so, you know, be on the lookout for some horses and pestilence or whatever.

Now for some housekeeping. We’ve undertaken a gargantuan project to organize our massive archive and update some useful posts we’ve published over the years (like this one on accounting as a second career). This is ongoing and we’ll be at it for a while — not to brag or anything but our archive is HUGE — and when we’re done you’ll be able to search past career advice, get answers specific to your service line, drill down into advice written just for people at your place in the accounting firm hierarchy, and for the masochists in the crowd we’re putting together a list of our meanest responses–er, tough love. You’ll find answers to questions you didn’t even know you had! Because what you really need in your life are more issues to add to your “things to worry about” file. Stay tuned!

Here’s what we’re working on this week:

  • Debunking scary headlines about how the current workers’ market is shifting back to employers (it’s not)
  • Ever wondered how to cheat on the CPA exam? We’ll tell you
  • A profile of a successful CPA who never spent a day working for a Big 4 firm thereby proving your professors wrong when they said if you don’t go straight to Big 4 you’ll go nowhere
  • A rags to riches story of a poorly-paid former Big 4 consultant turned successful influencer
  • Is It Time to Break Up With Your Big 4 Firm? A quiz

And lastly a couple carryovers from prior weeks we haven’t gotten to yet: a letter to the one person who wants to stay in public, some CPA exam numbers that scare the AICPA, most in-demand credentials, some more stuff I forgot that doesn’t really matter.

If there’s a headline you saved on Pocket you think we should be talking about, please shoot us a text at 202-505-8885 (I won’t sign you up for Cat Facts, promise), email [email protected] or @ me @inkywretch and we’ll get to it.

Lastly, Monterey Bay Aquarium has a live jelly cam you may be interested in, staring at Scyphozoa is a far better use of your time than picking fights on Twitter for sure:

Hope everyone has a good week and I mean that.
