Layoff Watch ’25: PwC ‘Aligns the Firm For the Future’ By Axing 1500 People

A tipster sent this in earlier today:

More PwC News today. Mass layoffs across tax, assurance, and audit.

They then linked this post in r/PwC:

It is definitely confirmed as multiple outlets have reported PwC will be laying off about 1,500 people. Someone also shared the text of an email from Assurance head Deanna Byrne to her people:

Team,

I want to take a moment to speak with you directly and transparently about a very difficult decision we’ve made.

We are moving forward with a workforce reduction across parts of our US firm— including Assurance, Tax and areas of our legacy Products & Technology business.

These are incredibly tough moments. Behind each role are individuals who have made meaningful contributions to our firm—people we’ve collaborated with, mentored, learned from, and shared successes with. That’s not something I take lightly.

This decision follows a long period of close review—along with actively supporting internal mobility and moving talent to support growth areas. But with historically low attrition and continued market shifts, this is a necessary step to better align our firm for the future.

Here’s what to expect: Notifications have begun and will be completed tomorrow, May 6 by EOD, with the exception of those who may be on vacation, sabbatical or a leave of absence. We also know the media is covering and will continue to cover this over the coming days, and it’s important that you have the full context. I know this is hard to hear—and I know the waiting can be even harder. Please take care of yourselves and one another. Check in on your teammates. Reach out if you have questions, need clarity, or just want to talk—whether it’s with your talent consultants, your leaders, or those you trust most within the firm.

Thank you for how you continue to show up for one another, especially during moments like these.

“We also know the media is covering and will continue to cover this over the coming days, and it’s important that you have the full context,” she said. What context? That business sucks and you picked a colossally stupid time to change your outfit?

The last time PwC laid people off — that we know of and that wasn’t by way of PIP, that is — was in October, 2024 when they cut about 1,800 people.

It was only a few days ago that PwC unveiled a new logo and ad campaign called “So You Can,” developed by McCann and FutureBrand. PwC had already been getting heat for this decision, covered here by The Telegraph on April 30: PwC under fire over ‘pointless’ rebrand amid job cuts.

  1. Big deal, PWC cuts 2% of its staff. They were way overdue for a good haircut. I hate it for those laid off and only hope it’s a good life lesson.

  2. They’ll change their mind by next week and hire a bunch of people. I’m old enough to remember when they took out full page ads in the newspaper to announce they they are a remote work firm now and forever!

      1. Yeah, how dare firms hire people in India! What are they trying to do, maximize profits?

  3. The funny thing is that the rebranding PWC just completed probably cost the annual salary of 1,500 employees.

  4. I just want my damn tax returns.

I feel like all these cuts are never truly good for the client because of the lost knowledge and time that is required to catch up the new team members that will manage the work….

  5. “Please take care of yourselves and one another.” In a better world someone would use their PwC credit card to open a group tab at nearby watering hole and leave it open all night.
