Posted on August 19, 2009 by Caleb Newquist

Bess and Greg are getting entrepreneurial over at DB and are probably going to need someone help them count the asston of cash they’re going to rake in as a result.
Those of you thinking about forming your own firm to pick up the ganja engagement probably have the best shot.

The IASB is Getting Serious About Convergence

  • Caleb Newquist
  • September 10, 2009

Trying to get accounting standards to converge is hard work. It’s so difficult, in fact, that the International Accounting Standards Committee is considering changing the name of the International Accounting Standards Board to the IFRS Board.
This critical move will obviously speed up a process that has been going on, seemingly, since Luca Pacioli was in short pants. We’re definitely in favor of putting your agenda out in front but this still seems to be typical accountant passive-aggressive behavior.
Since we’re sure you have much better ideas for the what the IASB’s new name should be, submit your suggestions in the comments. The best we could come up with appears in the tag line.

Non-Knights Don’t Think Rule Convergence Is All That Important

  • Caleb Newquist
  • December 23, 2009

Thumbnail image for tweedie_knight_jpeg.jpgNot everyone is as hung up on converging U.S. GAAP and IFRS as Sir David Tweedie.
As you may recall, Tweeds delayed his retirement in order to see the rules copulate and bring forth debit and credit harmony.
As admirable as his commitment to the project is, not too many people share his enthusiasm:

A survey by CFA Institute , an international association of more than 16,000 investment professionals, showed that three quarters of respondents believe that improving standards so they are more useful for making investment decisions is “at least as important if not more important” than reducing complexity or convergence.
While respondents generally support convergence, only 6 per cent of those surveyed, including research analysts, portfolio managers, corporate financial analysts and accountants, believe converging the International Accounting Standards Board and its US rival should be the primary objective.

It’s bad enough that Tweeds gets hassled by non-knighted clowns that don’t know a debit from their ass but now there’s a survey out there that says his pet project isn’t that important.
Plus, the SEC doesn’t seem too hung up on it and the FASB has its own problems. Has double-entry chivalry lost all its meaning?

UBS Closer to Getting the McCarthy Treatment

  • Caleb Newquist
  • June 21, 2009

IRS_logo-thumb-150x140.jpgIf you’ve got a Swiss bank account, here’s hoping you opened it because it was convenient for your monthly skiing/Toblerone getaway.
The U.S. and Swiss governments have agreed to share more tax information in order to crack down on all the tax dodgers out there that send their money offshore. The timing of this agreement is is especially diabolical because the IRS is currently trying to get Swiss bank behemoth UBS to name names of over 50,000 American clients.
Hearings in Miami are scheduled for next month to see if the names can be released, however, the Swiss have stated that this may violate Swiss law of double-secret-no-tattling-on-clients.
Ultimately, the Swiss Federal Council and Parliament will decide if the new agreement is kosh but judging by the Obama Administration’s hard-on for closing tax loopholes, they’ll probably play ball.
