Job Description:
A tax advisory firm serving artists and creative clients is seeking a Head of Tax to lead tax team education, technical tax training, and proficiency development firm-wide. This manager-level role ensures advisors have the training, mentorship, knowledge resources, and escalation support needed to deliver accurate, consistent tax work. During peak filing periods, the role may step back from client appointments to remain available as a trainer and technical resource for the advisor team. Responsibilities
- Lead advisor training, onboarding education, refresher sessions, and seasonal preparation
- Build structured learning paths and ongoing education based on knowledge gaps and tax law changes
- Develop and maintain systems for tracking advisor proficiency, readiness, and competencies by level
- Own and maintain the firm’s tax knowledge base — organized, accurate, and advisor-friendly
- Lead/coordinate research on complex or underdeveloped tax areas; document findings for advisor use
- Serve as escalation point for complex tax questions and ambiguous client situations
- Run the advisor mentorship program (matching, goals, cadence, monitoring)
- Partner with COO and Head of People on advisor performance evaluations and leveling
- Coordinate with subject-matter experts (international, estates, nonprofits, trusts, etc.) and assess new service areas
- Conduct pre-season, in-season, and post-season training and knowledge-base reviews
Seasonal Cadence:
- Pre-season: identify priority training topics, prepare refreshers and updated resources, clarify escalation pathways
- Tax season: serve as primary escalation point, reduce client appointments as needed, monitor recurring issues in real time
- Post-season: review training/escalation effectiveness, update materials, identify emerging client needs
Qualifications:
- Strong technical tax knowledge and sound judgment with complex/ambiguous client situations
- EA or CPA accreditation preferred
- Demonstrated teaching/coaching ability across experience levels
- Experience building structured training, documentation, or proficiency systems
- Comfort serving as a technical escalation point under incomplete information
- Experience with or aptitude for mentorship program design
- Strong organizational skills; able to own and maintain a knowledge base
- Curiosity, humility, discretion, and collaborative approach
- Ability to balance client-facing work with team support during high-volume periods
Benefits:
- 5 weeks paid vacation
- Health, dental, and vision coverage
- Flexible off-season scheduling
- 401(k) match after eligibility period
- Fully remote work
- Creative project reimbursement
- Free personal tax preparation (plus one friend/family member)
