Senators Are Slightly Worried the IRS Is Not at All Prepared For the 2026 Filing Season

panic button on wall

Democrat senators are worried that the IRS is so not ready for the upcoming filing season and ABC News was first to grab a letter they wrote to Treasury officials about their concerns:

In a letter to Treasury Secretary and acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent obtained first by ABC News, the group of 17 senators, led by Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with Democrats, wrote that they have “serious concerns” the IRS is “not prepared” for the next tax season, and that taxpayers “may face delays and difficulties in filing returns and receiving refunds.”

Ya think?

Senator Warren went on to give ABC a statement about her statement:

“Donald Trump’s endless attacks on the IRS are good news for his billionaire buddies and giant tax prep companies, but bad news for Americans getting ready for filing season. Americans rely on the IRS to file their taxes and get their tax refunds quickly and easily, and I’m pressing for answers,” she wrote to ABC.

The IRS has stated Direct File will not be available for 2026 but it’s possible some kind of direct file program will eventually pop up in the future. F in the chat for all the potential clients who will be attempting to find a tax professional come January.

  1. I’m glad someone is putting out the warning but I don’t think the large tax prep software companies are happy. I’ve worked in that industry for a lot of years of my career. I spent a lot of years working a lot of hours because the IRS hadn’t gotten all the forms updated until late December/early January. Sometimes it happens even later when a bill hasn’t finished up with the congressional lawyer interns writing the regulations. That happened with the passive loss forms. People don’t realize that writing the specs and coding those forms takes a lot of time. The testing of those forms also takes time.
