How to get the practical experience required for the CPA license application

I’m concerned about how to satisfy the experience requirement for the CPA license application in IL without having to leave my decent paying administrative job for a lesser paying accounting-dedicated job.
How does someone coming from a non-traditional background (not an accounting major) achieve this? My concern is that I will put the hard work into passing the CPA exam (this year) and never be able to get a decent paying job doing what I really want to do.
My background includes:
– small business bookkeeping/accounting experience (mostly from a job I left 5 years ago)
– active enrolled agent license (though I’m not working with clients right now)
– non-accounting related bachelor’s degree
– accounting, audit, tax coursework completed post-bacc to qualify for CPA exam
Thanks in advance.
