Going Concern Presents: The Top 5 Open Items of 2014

I know it seems like a long time ago but believe it or not, we launched Open Items this year. Crazy, huh?

In the spirit of year in review posts, we humbly present our picks for the top 5 Open Items of 2014. Mind you, these are arbitrarily chosen by our team of keyboard ninjas and you have absolutely no say in the matter.

What font do you use for your working papers?
Who knew of all the controversial topics in the profession, this one would be the most contentious among the Going Concern faithful. The topic never was truly resolved but we feel as though we got slightly closer to coming to agreement on acceptable fonts for workpapers. Or, at least, we agree that you need to just pick one and stick with it.

Why is the AICPA trying to devalue my CPA certification?
Ripping on the CGMA never gets old, and Open Items is not immune to the ripping. Don't worry, CGMA bashers, we'll leave the light on for you.

It’s Not All About the Big 4
How do you get a bunch of Kool Aid chugging Big 4 fanboys worked into a lather? Suggest that there's more to life than Big 4. GASP.

How Many Letters After Your Name Is Too Many?
Oh dear. Sort of along the lines of CGMA bashing, putting too many letters after your name is like buying a convertible when you're balding and middle aged. It's just trying too hard. So just how many letters are too many? It's those types of questions that we're here to answer as a community.

What happened to the /r/accounting subreddit???
Early on, just after we started Open Items, we posted one of our own that took on the accounting subreddit. Mostly because /r/accounting isn't important enough for us to attack on the front page.

Honorable mentions: The guy with 5 offers on the table, someone who thought they were on a Big 4 blacklist, the dapper dude who wanted to wear a bowtie, and someone wondered why anyone would want to be an audit partner? There are certainly more good ones we've missed but that's the whole point of a year in review post.

Going forward, we hope you all will continue to use Open Items as your platform of choice for therapy sessions, rants, paranoid ramblings, and attempts to be clever. You asked for it, you got it. And if we may say so, you lot have done a wonderful job making it your own.
